Acanthis flammea rostrata (Coues, 1861). Iceland Redpoll. subspecies. Accepted . Name authority: UKSI. Establishment means: Native.
Photos were taken at the NH coast Conventional wisdom holds that rostrata "Greater" Common Redpolls are large and dark, and that hornemanni or "Hornemann's" Hoary Redpoll are equally large and very pale. So I have always assumed that the two would be easier to tell apart than the smaller "Southern" flammea Common and exilipes Hoary Redpolls. As energetic as their electric zapping call notes would suggest, Common Redpolls are active foragers that travel in busy flocks. Look for them feeding on catkins Some general remarks on the identification of redpolls -Common Redpoll ssp. rostrata (Greenland Redpoll) – hereafter 'rostrata' – compared with all the rostrata), which is another winter visitor and is larger than the Common Redpoll and darker than the Lesser Redpoll. The final type is the Arctic Redpoll (C. Acanthis flammea rostrata (Coues, 1861).
